Reforestation in North Sumatra
THE CONTEXT
Indonesia is the biggest exporter of tropical wood in the world. Most of the wood is exported illegally. The tropical forests are destroyed and replaced by plantations producing paper and palm oil. In few years, the massive deforestation has placed the Country from the 21st to the 3rd place for greenhouse gaz emissions.
Due to demographic pressure, the mangrove has shrank by 25% of its surface since 1980 and are one of the most endengered species worldwide.

THE PROGRAM
The NGO Planète Urgence runs this program Trained by the local team of YaGaSu which is dedicated to this program, 5 site supervisors are employed to:
  • Take care of the tree nursery.
  • Identify the parcels where the mangrove can be planted in their area.
  • Communicate to the local community on the benefits they can get from the mangrove.
  • Plan the plantations, recruit staff and train them on how to plant a tree in line with the program standards
  • Supervise the growth of the new trees
  • Replace the the dead trees by nw ones
  • Report to the YaGaSu local manager on potential difficulties and successes

THE VALUES ASSOCIATED TO THE PROGRAM
  • Environment: protect the area against Tsunami risks and restaure the local ecosystem by planting trees with high CO2 captation capacity.
  • Economy: facilitate local communities development by generating incomes.
  • Communities : integrate the community in the program to help them develop without strong assistance.
